The day we all lost our innocence...

On September 11, 2001 we awoke to beautiful sunshine here in Kiev. It was a picture perfect day, much like the same one that was to greet New York some seven hours later. That morning Sam and I played with Microsoft Train Simulator and imagined we were back in the days of the Flying Scotsman racing through the English countryside. Little did we know that by that night we would be stripped of such childish imaginations and be thrust into a world that seemed to be on the brink of utter chaos. Later in the afternoon I was just finishing up a language lesson when my friend Glen Clementi called and said, "Turn on the TV! Something terrible has just happened in New York!" I immediately turned on the Russian news channel and noticed that they were broadcasting a live feed from CNN. In bold English words the screen read, "America under attack..." To our utter shock we sat there and watched live as the second World Trade Center Tower collapsed in a heap of smoke and dust. We had just witnessed, in a strange voyeur fashion, the mass murder of thousands of people. None of us will ever forget that day when we lost our innocence.
